Making kindness the norm for better mental wellbeing

Often, it’s the little things we do that make the biggest difference – and this is certainly true when it comes to looking after our own mental health and the mental wellbeing of others. Checking in with a friend or relative with a quick text or phone call; holding the door open for someone else to pass through; stopping to help a visitor with directions – these little actions you take can not only brighten someone else’s day – they can also give you a mental boost!

Random Acts of Kindness Week runs from 9-15 February, with Random Acts of Kindness Day taking place on 17 February. It’s all about taking kindness into your own hands to make a difference to yourself and others. And whilst this is only officially marked once a year, there’s no reason why everyday can’t involve a random act of kindness.

Good Thinking offers some tips on little things you can do to be kind to yourself and others:

  1. Take time out of your day to focus on yourself by practising meditation or mindfulness. Why not try out one of our free apps to get you started. Who knows, it might be the start of a new journey for you!
  2. Take a walk in nature. Even though we live in a huge city, London is packed with green spaces where you can relax, unwind and spend time with yourself.
  3. Check in with those around you. Often, it’s not obvious when someone may be struggling with their mental health. Use our range of practical guides for advice on looking out for others and starting conversations about mental health.
  4. Get involved in your local community. As such a diverse city, there’s always something to get involved in across London, whether it’s helping out at a local community centre or event, renovating community green spaces, or supporting a vulnerable neighbour with their weekly shopping. Find out more about making positive changes where you live.
  5. Get physically active. A short walk round the block, cycling to the local shops or, with Spring on the way, a bit of gardening to get things ready for the better weather – movement releases endorphins that boost your mood as well as being good for your body. Get inspired!
