We’ve all had those occasional nights spent tossing and turning, unable to switch off and get to sleep. However, when sleep problems become more regular, they can be both a cause and effect of poor mental health.

Created by the World Sleep Society, #WorldSleepDay (14 March) promotes the importance of sleep for health and wellbeing and encourages everyone to make sleep an priority.

Dr. Lourdes Del Rosso co-chairs World Sleep Day and, says,

“Waking up feeling fully rested is one of the greatest sensations in the world. Imagine how energising that feels – your mind refreshed, your body recharged and your resilience stronger than ever. Prioritising your sleep health is the key to maintaining that energy and thriving every day!”

Your sleep will be influenced by different external factors at different times in your life. Maybe you’re a new parent adapting to a new nighttime routine, or perhaps your job involves shift work making it challenging to develop a regular sleeping pattern. Perhaps playing games online or scrolling through social media keeps you up at night. Or worrying about money, work or your health might make it difficult to fall asleep.

For Londoners, the noise and lights of a busy, 24-hour city can make nodding off particularly difficult for many people.

As London’s digital mental wellbeing service, Good Thinking understands the close connection between sleep and mental health. In this article, we examine why sleep is so important, explain what healthy sleep is and suggest ways to make your sleep health a priority. And, of course, we direct you to the most useful Good Thinking resources to help you get a good night’s sleep.
