Falling during Stress Awareness Month, World Health Day on 7 April this year focuses on maternal and newborn health, prioritising women's longer-term physical and emotional health through pregnancy and beyond.

Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and stress affect up to 27% of women in the UK during pregnancy and the first year after childbirth[1]. Also known as perinatal mental health, NHS data shows that in the year to February 2024, over 57,000 women received specialist support for mental health problems – an increase of around one third on the previous year[2].

Pregnancy can trigger a wide range of often conflicting emotions. Navigating pregnancy and the huge changes that caring for a newborn can bring to everyday life can be challenging, both physically and mentally. Therefore, access to support services, such as South East London Mind's Mindful Mums network, are vital to the mental wellbeing of new or soon-to-be mothers.

Mindful Mums is different to many other mother and baby groups in that the focus is on new mothers talking to one another and making meaningful connections with others going through a similar experience” explains Belinda Graham Service Manager, South East London Mind.

“Mothers are more than welcome to bring their little ones along – but it’s also about being able to take some time out, destress and relax.”

The award-winning, free wellbeing groups run across Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich (now also open to residents of Lambeth and Southwark boroughs) helping pregnant women and new mothers look after their mental and emotional health during pregnancy and their baby’s first year. The group was originally set up by parents who know how stressful and challenging both pregnancy and a child’s first year can be, especially for brand new parents.

“Our groups have a particular focus on stress-management and coping strategies, with the aim of empowering parents to continue with their wellbeing journey once our support groups have finished” continues Belinda

“We offer six groups that aim to speak to all sectors of our vibrant and diverse communities across South East London, including young mothers, LGBTQ+ parents and parents from global majority backgrounds.”

Since the service began in 2016, has supported more than a thousand women and birthing people across south east London.

Mindful Mums also provides a sister service in Bexley, as well as wellbeing services for new and expectant fathers.
